By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — With five schools competing on Aug. 10 at the Watauga High School track, at any point in time there was something going on at the venue. Down time in the running events? Just look to the High Jump or Discus. Are you missing the Long Jump and Pole Vault?
In team points, Watauga more than double the production of second place Ashe County and roughly six times the number of points recorded by 4A Northwestern Conference rival, third place South Caldwell. It was a team effort, with the Pioneers swamping the competition up and down the event schedule.
A few Watauga highlights:
- In the grueling 3200 Meters event, Janie Beach-Verhay captured the No. 1 spot, almost two full minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
- Senior Ellary Smith and freshman Winter Shaw went 1-2 in the 1600 meters event, with Anna Morris also picking up team points at No. 4.
- Sadie Buchanan, Frances Davis and Ava Curtis swept the top three spots in the 300 Meter Hurdles.
- Lainey Johnston, just a freshman, won the 800 Meters by almost four seconds over runner-up Lila Engler of Forsyth Home Educators.
- It was a 1-2-3-4-6 finish for the Pioneers in the 200 Meters, with Sienna Johnson, Sarah Darner, Ava Doty, Mackenzy Cheek and Hadleigh Windish, respectively.
- Watauga athletes swept the top six spots in the Long Jump: Kayla Graham, Olivia Burroughs, Eden Krenzin, Olivia Foskey, Sydney Helms, and Emmerson Martin.
- Oliva Burroughs continued her near domination of the field events, with wins in Shot Put, Discus, and Pole Vault to go along with her No. 2 finish in the Long Jump.
Among the other schools, top performances included:
- Freshman Lucy Roth if Forsyth Home Educators’ No. 1 finish in the 400 Meters, with South Caldwell’s Payton Anderson a little more than a second behind at No. 2.
- Ashe County’s Emmi Cheek captured first place in the 100 Meters
- Ashe County showed well in the 4×100 Relay, capturing No. 1 and No. 3 spots around second place Watauga.
